Between the relegation of River Plate, the aging of Estudiantes La Plata and the sales of key players on the Velez Sarsfield squad, things fell neatly into place for Boca Juniors to take over the top of the table in Argentinian football once again. They’ve done it in absolutely spectacular fashion, winning the title in the Argentine Primera 2011 Apertura with two rounds to spare in the tournament.
Boca Juniors Win Argentine Primera 2011 Apertura Title, Their 24th All-Time
Boca Juniors have won the league title in Argentina with two games to spare after defeating Banfield 3-0.
Boca’s 3-0 win over Banfield put them on 39 points, 11 points better than second placed Racing Club. Tigre sit in third place with 26 points and a game in hand. Dario Cvitanich, formerly of Banfield, Ajax and Pachuca scored two first-half goals against his former club, giving Boca a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Diego Rivero added the third goal early in the second half.
The title is the 24th in Boca’s history, second only to their hated rivals River Plate. Though this season has felt odd without a Super Clasico, no one can discredit the Blue and Gold, whose form has been something to behold. They’re unbeaten in their 17 Primera matches this season and haven’t lost in their last 27 matches in all competitions, dating back to the previous campaign.
