Sporting Gijon Vs. Barcelona: David Barral Gives Hosts Amazing 1-0 Lead

If you were wondering exactly how high of a pedestal Barcelona are on right now, this should prove it. David Barral has scored 16 minutes into their match against Sporting Gijon, and the hosts celebrated as if they just won the World Cup. To be fair, it was a fantastic goal, but it’s stunning that a team was overcome with so much joy for scoring a 16th minute goal. It’s like something out of a movie, except it’s actually a professional football game.

Barral cut in from the left flank, skinning Dani Alves and Gerard Pique en route to the goal. From the center of the penalty area, in between the penalty spot and the six yard box, Barral held off his defenders and slotted the ball into the back of the net at the far post, past Victor Valdez. His teammates went absolutely crazy and crowded him, marking the best reaction to a first half goal I’ve ever seen in any competition.

Barca aren’t quite playing a first choice starting XI, with Pedro and Sergio Busquets resting ahead of a Champions League tie against Arsenal. Ibrahim Afellay and Javier Mascherano have taken their places, and Barcelona do not look as sharp as usual.
