Alessandro Matri’s headed goal in the 30th minute was all Juventus needed to secure a crucial Derby d’Italia victory-though a late flurry of chances from Inter made things interesting right at the death.
Juventus Vs. Inter Milan: Juventus Ride Matri Goal To 1-0 Win
The first half belonged to Juventus and Inter were quite lucky to be down only a goal as the teams headed into the break. The second half was a much more even affair, with Juventus content to play deeper look to capitalize on the counter as opposed to the more attacking style they employed in the first half. The result was a near endless loop of Inter attacks being thwarted by a largely impenetrable Juventus back line and Juventus managing to counter dangerously just often enough to keep things interesting.
Samuel Eto’o had a pair of chances right at the death to put Inter back on level terms; the first was an absolute sitter in front of a wide open net that Eto’o somehow managed to direct into the crossbar. The second came less than a minute later and was less of a waste, Eto’o’s first touch being just too heavy and Buffon able to gather before the shot was taken.
As uncomfortable as it might have been, Juventus will certainly take it. The three points put them in sixth, just three points behind Inter and the final Champions League slot in Serie A; this was a huge win for Juventus which should give them reason to feel good heading into the home stretch. As for Inter, an equally big blow and a result which puts their chances of challenging for the scudetto in serious doubt.
