Chelsea Vs. Everton: Leighton Baines Goal From A Free Kick Sends Game To Penalties

It looked all done and dusted in the FA Cup fourth round replay between Chelsea and Everton, but Leighton Baines has hit a stunning free kick to level the match on 119 minutes, just one minute before Chelsea were going to walk away with a win and a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Instead, we’re headed to penalty kicks to decide who will proceed. From 25 yards away from goal, in the center of the pitch, Leighton Baines stepped up and curled a fantastic free kick into the back of the net with his gifted left foot. With the ball being placed into the top right corner, almost right on the upper 90, Petr Cech had absolutely no chance to make a save.

On ESPN in the UK, the announcers got really dramatic, saying that Baines “saved Everton’s season.” Really, it’s not that extreme. Everton are almost certainly not getting to Europe and not getting relegated, so the FA Cup is all they have left to play for.

Chelsea have won the coin toss, and the penalties will not be taken at the end where the Everton fans are sitting.
