AC Milan Vs. Napoli: Large Gap Between Napoli’s Midfield And Defense, Milan Don’t Seem To Notice Or Care

It’s been a bit of a sloppy opening at the San Siro, but there are still some interesting tactical developments in the Serie A match between AC Milan and Napoli. The Azzuri’s setup seems to create a pretty large gap between their midfielders and defenders when Milan have a long spell of possession, but Milan either haven’t figured it out or can’t be bothered to care. It makes some sense that Napoli would concede that area of the pitch against a team playing three strikers and three defensive-minded midfielders, but it’s certainly a danger if Milan figure out how to use it. A couple of times, Pato has dropped back into that space, and he had a lot of time and room on the ball as a result.

Going the other direction, Napoli do not look very good. Their supply to their front players has been poor, so their lack of potency going forward can hardly be blamed on Ezequiel Lavezzi’s absence. Marek Hamsik hasn’t been allowed to make much of an impact, and Milan are doing well to keep Napoli’s wing backs from getting into positions to put in dangerous crosses.

It hasn’t been a terrific match so far and a 0-0 would hardly be a surprise, but early on, it’s advantage Milan.
