Villarreal have turned in a shocking performance this evening, falling at home to struggling Levante. The strike pairing of Giuseppe Rossi and Nilmar has been lethal all season, but in Nilmar’s first goal back in the starting lineup after injury, he failed to link up with his partner to create opportunities as the Yellow Submarine were held scoreless by the Granotes.

Valdo was the man who scored for Levante, just three minutes into the second half. Xisco Muñoz played him through, behind the defense after a Villarreal turnover. Valdo ran onto the ball, torching Carlos Marchena and rounding the keeper, Diego Lopez, before tapping the ball into the back of the net. It was the only goal Levante would need, though they had plenty of other chances.
With a defense that looked sluggish, a midfield that lacked creativity, and a strike force that didn’t click, Villarreal struggled. It was a rare poor performance for them, as they failed to look decent in any area of the pitch. Despite their loss, the Yellow Submarine will remain in 3rd place going into next week. Levante didn’t climb out of the drop zone with their win, but they are now in 18th place, just one point from safety.
