Just minutes after Aldo de Nigris put Monterrey ahead with a headed goal, the Rayados have been handed another advantage independent of what’s currently showing on the scoreboard. Pachuca’s Leobardo Lopez has been shown a red card for his foul on Luis Perez, a decision which the referee will probably regret when he watches the incident back on tape.
Monterrey Vs. Pachuca: Leobardo Lopez Shown Questionable Red Card
Going up for a ball in the air, Perez and Lopez crashed, with Lopez unfairly impeding the progress of his opponent. It was certainly a foul, and when the referee reached for his pocket, the Pachuca players seemed surprised that Lopez was about to be booked. They grew even more surprised, and then outraged when Lopez was shown the red card for a seemingly innocent foul. Lopez neither showed his studs, nor lead with his elbow in the challenge, and it was in no way dangerous. What the referee saw isn’t apparent, but in any event, Lopez has been sent off and Pachuca will have to play the rest of the match with ten men.
