Cardiff City Fan Survives 20 Ft Fall At Millwall Match
Over-exuberence can be a dangerous thing, especially if you’re standing at the top of what is essentially a concrete cliff with a 20-ft drop and a less-than-soft landing. A travelling Cardiff City fan found that out the hard way after his celebrations following a goal during Cardiff’s 3-3 draw at Millwall somehow led to a horrific fall from the top tier at the New Den. He was treated at the scene by paramedics and fortunately survived the incident - he remains in hospital in serious but stable condition.
According to the police, there’s no evidence of foul play (just yet), so what this highlights more than anything else is the need for better safety around stadiums around sport as well as more common sense on the part of fans. We see at least one nasty incident a year, and it’s not just in football: A Texas Rangers fan reaching for a foul ball fell thirty feet from the upper deck at Rangers Ballpark last July. Like our Cardiff fan, he survived, but unless there’s a little more awareness of the situation someone is going to be killed at one of these matches and then the overreaction may get ugly.
