Bayer Leverkusen boss Jupp Heynckes will return to Bavaria to take over Bayern Munich at the end of the 2010-11 season, according to a statement on the club’s website. The news comes a few weeks after current FCB coach Louis van Gaal decided to leave Bayern come the end of the season following a string of poor results in the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. Rumors linking Heynckes to the Bayern job have been all over the German press for the past week, and the Bayern board’s desire to bring the man who had managed the club twice before was obvious.
Jupp Heynckes Signs Two-Year Deal With Bayern Munich
Heynckes, who enjoyed a great playing career as a striker for Borussia Mönchengladbach, Hannover 96, and the West German national team, was Bayern coach from 1987 to 1991, winning back-to-back Bundesliga titles and twice reaching the semifinals of the European Cup before being fired after a poor string of results early on in the 1991-2 season. He also managed the Bavarian side for five games at the end of the 2008-9 season following the sacking of Jürgen Klinsmann.
Heynckes’ hiring sets the stage for the summer’s expected changing of the guard at the Allianz Arena following a disappointing season for the defending Bundesliga champions, and adds another level of intrigue to Bayern’s clash with Bayer in Munich on April 17.
