A lackluster start has given way to two goals in four minutes, giving Everton a 2-1 lead at St. James's Park. Just moments after Leon Osman had equalized, Phil Jagielka got on the end of a cutting ball from Leighton Baines, redirecting a half-volley past Steve Harper for the go-ahead goal.
Newcastle Vs. Everton: Phil Jagielka Gives Toffees Lead
The score came after Newcastle was called for a foul 35 yards from goal. Baines stepped up to a ball even with the left post and put a beguiling curve on his restart, playing the ball behind the high line before it curved nearly parallel to goal, onto the foot of Jagielka. The Everton defender had to stretch and raise his foot to ball, rising off the bounce. Once he did, Harper had no chance to prevent the visitors from assuming the league.
In the moments after the goal, Everton looked noticeable more confident on the ball, maintaining more control through midfield. The early match lulls have been shaken off. The Toffee absences have been forgetting. David Moyes’s team has a 2-1 lead at St. James’s Park.
