A piece of fortune fall to Blackburn in first half stoppage time at Craven Cottage when a shot off the head of Brede Hangeland went past Mark Schwarzer and into the Fulham goal, sending the sides into half tied 1-1. Grant Hanley's left footed shot was originally targeted for Schwarzer's left post, but glancing off the right side of Hangeland's head, the ball went into the center of goal after the Australian had reacted, giving Blackburn their equalizer.

Fulham, however, played a huge part in the goal through their inability to clear their lines. The Rovers had stumbled over the ball for five or ten seconds in the Fulham area, and when the Cottagers took the ball off their feet, they were unable to get it more than a few yards outside their box. When a Fulahm player tried to turn on the ball and carry it away from the box, a successful challenge put the ball on Handley's feet. A couple of touches and a blast led to the own goal, Blackburn nullifying Damien Duff's opener.
