Shakhtar Donetsk Vs. Roma: 3-0 (6-2) Win Over Giallorossi Sees First Ukraine Team Into Champions League Quarterfinals
Shakhtar Donetsk has become the first Ukrainian team to qualify for the quarterfinals of Champions League, earning a 3-0 win over a Roma team that played the last half of the match down a man. Combined with Shakhtar’s 3-2 win three weeks ago in Rome, Ukraine’s champions are easily through to the final eight, with Roma failing to garner the post-Claudio Ranieri bounce for which many had hoped.
Instead, it was a disappointing Champions League debut for Vincenzo Montella, the legendary player making his first foray into the competition as coach. However, Tomas Hübschman quickly rained on Montella’s debut, coming from deep midfield to flick a rolling cross from left of goal onto the far post, the sharp-angle shot making it 1-0, Shakhtar. The goal meant Roma would need to score three times to eliminate their hosts.

Roma started off the brighter of the two sides, appearing as though they might actually manage to score enough goals to move on to the quarter-finals. That all changed with Shakhtar’s goal, of course. I’d love to tell you who scored, but although Tomáš Hübschman took the credit and the celebration, it looked as though he didn’t even get a touch on as the cross rolled on past three Roma defenders and into the net. Willian got past David Pizarro to put the ball through, but it sure didn’t look as though it would be a shot. Somehow, though, it rolled past Roma keeper Doni and into the back of the net.
In the 27th minute, Roma had their chance to narrow the gap. Howard Webb spotted a foul committed by Henrikh Mkhitaryan inside the box. The midfielder saw yellow and Borriello stepped up to the spot. The Roma forward sent the ball to the right but Rustam Khudzhamov guessed right to save and clear.

As for Shakhtar, despite their best hopes, playmaker Fernandinho has yet to fully recover from a broken leg, and he hasn’t made the bench. Jádson takes his place, alongside Willian and Douglas Costa, all in support of striker Luiz Adriano.
