As SBNation’s Graham MacAree wrote about earlier today, Pep Guardiola thinks Arsenal FC’s Jack Wilshere would be a mere reserve for FC Barcelona. Whether he’s actually that arrogant, actually that delusional, or just trying to rile up Wilshere, it’s tough to see what good those comments could do. I suppose it’s possible that Wilshere could end up playing a little too jacked up and, as a result, make silly mistakes, but that seems less likely than the opposite outcome. That opposite outcome, of course, is Jack Wilshere’s coming out party. A dominating “eff you” performance. Wilshere could make us remember the 2011 UEFA Champions League Round of 16 as the time he went from “promising young player” to “superstar.”
FC Barcelona Vs. Arsenal FC 2011: UEFA Champions League, Pep Guardiola’s Comments About Jack Wilshere Set Up Potential Defining Match
Between the comments by Guardiola, the scene at the Camp Nou, Arsenal’s lack of a defensive midfielder and the need for Wilshere to step up, Javier Mascherano’s poor form, and Barcelona’s lack of central defenders, the conditions almost seem too perfect. We’re completely set up for a career defining game. Steven Gerrard in Istanbul type of stuff.
But then again, this is Barcelona. They’re a really good team. Like, the best team in the world kind of really good team. And it’s very possible that Wilshere gets completely dominated.
I feel the career defining performance, though.
