What News Of Carlo Ancelotti’s Departure Tells Us About Blues’ Plans - We Ain’t Got No History
We Ain't Got No History, SB Nation's Chelsea FC community blog, has supported Ancelotti throughout a rough season, but if Carrie Baird's report at Sports Illustrated comes to fruition, Graham MacAree and the rest of the WAG crew will need to start looking toward a future without their venerable teddy bear. As such, MacAree offers some insights on today's news, observations garnered from SI's video and what we've seen from the Blues since the calendar turned:
- Chelsea would rather play in a 4-3-3 and will apparently recruit to fit that formation, which means that those rumours of buying wing-forwards like Neymar, Alexis Sanchez (who Chelsea were after in January), and Eden Hazard have some real meat behind them.
- Andrea Pirlo was a transfer target in the winter window, which would have been a slightly bizarre stop-gap move. Pirlo would obviously have helped the passing and could have served as a fun mentor to Josh McEachran, but he'd have been far too expensive relative to his output, I suspect.
- Chelsea attempted to buy Barcelona centre back Gerard Pique but he's no longer in the picture. Obviously, they ended up with the far more charming David Luiz instead, so I'm cool with that, but it really does sound like the Blues were going nuts with Abramovich's cash in the window.
To build on what Graham notes, if Chelsea is intent on staying 4-3-3, Didier Drogba will either need to enter a role commensurate with the twilight of his career of find another place to salvage the last one or two years he has as somebody who can be a consistent focal point in attack. We also learn, with Chelsea's attempts to wrestle Piqué way from his hometown club, that the Blues are still not lacking for audacity. As if the Torres move wasn't sufficient illustration of that.
