Timbers, Whitecaps Taking Promotions In Very Different Directions

The Portland Timbers are selling culture and atmosphere. Their ads tend to focus on chanting crowds and celebrations, as well as axe-wielding fans. They are well produced, but just gritty enough to hold onto that "authentic" feel. So far, they've sold 12,000 season tickets and are hoping to sell about 500 more.

The Vancouver Whitecaps, meanwhile, are selling something a little different. Their promos are equally well produced, but in a totally different way. They are slick, while often times focusing on lots of things that don't have very much to do with what's going on inside the stadium. They feature celebrities, women deciding which players are hottest and players busting pinatas. Their latest promo, though, is sure to draw a lot of attention...

↵It should be noted that the Whitecaps’ overall campaign appears to be even more successful, as they’ve reportedly sold close to 16,000 season tickets already. It’s still too early to tell how good either team is going to be, but the atmospheres promise to be impressive.
