For the most part, I totally dismiss any rumored transfer or trade that is announced on April Fools' Day. But this Dwayne De Rosario trade just won't quit. The supposed deal has De Rosario going to the New York Red Bulls from Toronto FC in exchange for Tony Tchani and Danleigh Borman, and it is being repeated by numerous reputable news sources.
Did Toronto FC Really Trade Dwayne De Rosario On April Fools’ Day? Maybe
↵From a distance, this trade does make some sense. De Rosario has made no secret about his desire to get a Designated Player contract. Last year, he made about $450,000 in total compensation, making him one of the highest paid MLS players not on a DP contract. He even trained with Celtic this past offseason without first getting the permission of TFC management.
↵
Looking at the salaries, it's hard to see how the Red Bulls could fit De Rosario under the salary cap. Based on last year's salary information, no team other than the Los Angeles Galaxy spent more on player salaries and the Red Bulls didn't clear a lot of space in the offseason. But in MLS if there's a will, there's usually a way.
↵That said, there has still been no official announcement. Until there’s something from both of the teams, it’s probably best to assume this is some kind of joke. If it is a joke, kudos to whoever started it. They definitely win the award for “April Fools’ Day Joke of the Year.”
