Stefan Frei and the crossbar get nearly all the credit for Toronto and Los Angeles being scoreless at the half. The Galaxy had three excellent chances in the first 15 minutes and were thwarted each time by either the TFC keeper or the woodwork. With the exception of those chances and a nice point blank save by Donovan Ricketts on an Gianluca Zavarise's header, it was hardly awe inspiring soccer.
Toronto FC Vs. LA Galaxy: Scoreless at Halftime
Frankly, it was an odd half that saw the Galaxy control play for roughly the first 25 minutes and Toronto controlling play for the final 20 minutes. With the exception of a couple dangerous scoring chances for each team, it was a herky-jerky paced and sloppy half that could have used a couple goals to spice things up.
Instead we got Chad Barrett slamming the ball of the crossbar (and later inexplicably passing when he was alone one-on-one with Frei) and some excellent saves from both goalkeepers, strategically placed in 45 minutes of mostly uninspiring soccer. Call it a vanilla cupcake with vanilla icing, accented by a few colorful sprinkles on top that trick you in to believing there could be something special about that obviously plain vanilla cupcake. We’ll have to see if any tactical or personnel changes at halftime can liven things up a bit.
David Beckham received a yellow card for a late tackle on Julian de Guzman in the 44th minute. It's Beckham's fifth card in five matches which means the Galaxy designated player will miss the next match for yellow card accumulation.
