The Portland Timbers have opened Jeld -Wen stadium in style, putting two goals past a dismal Chicago Fire side in a fast and furious first half. Although the weather hasn't been particularly cooperative (it's absolutely pouring in Portland, and the pitch isn't draining well), the crowd has been spectucular and the team's done their part too.
Portland Timbers Vs. Chicago Fire: 2-0 Timbers At Half Time
The hosts took an early lead following a corner only to see Kenny Cooper's effort ruled out rather controversially for the ball having gone out of play, but they wouldn't have to wait long to get their first legitimate home goal. The big striker turned provider this time, slipping in Jorge Perlaza after Chicago's defence had lost its line. Perlaza surged forwards, avoided a silly challenge from goalkeeper Sean Johnson, and slid the ball into an empty net.
Next Rodney Wallace got into the party with a deflected volley following a knocked-back free kick, and Portland have now found themselves well on course to record their first ever victory in the MLS. Perhaps this side was simply waiting until they got home to show everyone the good stuff.
Oscar Salazar, meanwhile, is having an odd game. He’s already increased his season card output by 150%, has ruled out a goal from a corner despite the ball not conclusively having gone out, and apparently has ejected Portland general manager Gavin Wilkinson (I don’t know what’s going on there either). Nice.
