Well, it was close for a couple minutes, anyway. Marco Pappa scored from about 16 yards out to temporarily cut the Chicago Fire's deficit to one, but Mamadou Danso scored a couple minutes later to put the Portland Timbers up 4-2.

Danso's goal came after a scramble in front of the net and probably should have been disallowed after Timbers forward Kenny Cooper appeared to hit the ball with his hand. But it stood up and allowed Timbers fans to breathe a sigh of relief during the MLS home opener.
Pappa's goal appeared to give the Fire their first real momentum of the match after they had been thoroughly outplayed and, at one point, trailed 3-0. Pappa's goal came after he was able to create some space about 16 yards out and lofted his shot over the head of Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson.
In the 83rd minute, Darlington Nagbe made his MLS debut.
