Houston Dynamo Sign Sergio Koke, Je-Vaughn Watson
Just a day before the MLS transfer window closes, the Houston Dynamo have signed Sergio Koke and Je-Vaughn Watson. Of the two, Koke is the more decorated and is expected to start and provide a scoring boost. He will not be a Designated Player, though, a team source said. Dynamo Theory, SB Nation's Houston Dynamo blog, has been following the story closely:
Make no mistake, this is a big day for the Dynamo organization. Koke may not bring the name recognition the likes of David Beckham or Thierry Henry, but he does bring a proven ability to score and be an effective attacking player. His speed, ball control and experience could be a huge spark for the Dynamo attack once he settles with the club and get used to the style of play in MLS.
Koke, 27, most recently played FC of the Greek first division. The native Spaniard has also played for La Liga’s Malaga, Ligue 1’s Marseille and Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon. Earlier rumors suggested he would be a Designated Player, but there was no mention of that classification in the team release.
“I think it’s good that we’ve added depth to positions of need,” Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said in a team release. “Sergio has a good track record. We did our due diligence looking at the way he plays, and by all accounts and based on what he did to make himself free, he shows an eagerness that’s not seen too often, so he comes in with a great attitude so far.”
Watson, 27, has played his entire career in his native Jamaica, most recently with Sporting Central where he was a team captain and a central midfielder.
