The Vancouver Whitecaps will feel hard done by their inability to grab three points at home against Chivas USA, but they'll have to settle for their third draw at Empire Field in four matches to keep their home unbeaten streak alive. All of the best chances went to the Whitecaps, but no goals came from them as the Goats went to Vancouver and came away with a valuable point.
Vancouver Whitecaps Vs. Chivas USA: Both Teams Forced To Settle For Scoreless Draw
From the outset, Vancouver was the better team. They created the bulk of the chances and undoubtedly had the better of the chances, but they couldn't get the ball into the net. Some of that was due to poor finishing, but most of it was due to good goalkeeper by Dan Kennedy to go along with bad luck. Eric Hassli saw Kennedy his get hand on what looked like a sure goal and even then it still clanged off of the post. Another opportunity looked like it was goal bound, but Simon Elliot was there to clear the ball off of the line after it beat Kennedy. One more chance just barely missed the post and all of that was in the first half alone.
In the second half, Chivas were better. It wasn’t that they were thoroughly dominated in the first half, but they couldn’t create chances. They had some possession, but their best opportunity to score in the first half came on a tight angled header that was blocked. Things didn’t get a whole lot better though. The Goats had all but one of the corner kicks in the match, but they weren’t turning them into scoring chances. In all, it was a lot of activity leading to little achievement for the Goats.
Meanwhile, Vancouver added a few more chances in the second half. Chivas’ defense was better in the second 45 minutes so the Whitecaps didn’t have as many chances as they had in the first half, but they had a few, only to see the ball elude the goal time and time again. By the time it came to an end, neither team had tallied and the two sides were forced to take only a point, which might have been fair to Chivas, but not to the Whitecaps.
