Columbus Crew Vs. Sporting Kansas City: Julio Cesar Draws Red

Sporting Kansas City's efforts to find the equalizer just got a little tougher as defender Julio Cesar was shown his second yellow, apparently for handling the ball purposely in in the 74th minute. The red card leaves SKC with 10 men, and continues a trend of MLS referees showing red cards at an alarming pace.

The play in question seemed a bit harsh, but was also understandable. It didn’t look entirely clear if Cesar meant to handle the ball, but his touching of it did prevent a clear scoring opportunity.

This has been a tough match for SKC, which was coming off a two-week break. Their last match, as you may remember, was a 3-3 tie to the Vancouver Whitecaps in which they blew a 3-0 lead that included yielding two stoppage-time goals. They have had pressure few chances on goal, and seem to have been significantly slowed by the cold and wet conditions.
