According to a document leaked to the the BBC, part of the Scottish Premier league’s strategic plan for the next few years involves the creation of a British League Cup. Proposals for a cross-border competition are nothing new, of course - Scotland’s football teams have been desperate to cash in on potentially lucrative matches with the larger clubs down south, and the idea of a British League Cup (the current one is limited to English teams only) has been shot down before, but it’s still a cool concept and at some point it’ll have to be pushed through.
Scottish Premier League Proposes British League Cup
I mean, what're the reasons against expanding the League Cup to include other teams from the home nations? The integrity of the competition? Hardly anybody takes it seriously anyway, and the defending champions are Birmingham City. The Europa League place? Give it to sixth in the league, which is where it mostly goes anyway. I can't be the only one who thinks it would be really cool to have the possibility of a Liverpool vs. Celtic match in a competitive fixture, can I?
The other ‘proposals’ in the plan are somewhat weirder:
- The national team's Fifa ranking to improve from 66th to 15th within five years
- The SPL's coefficient ranking to improve from 16th to 10th in five years
- Broadcasting revenues to increase by 50% in five years
- The Scottish Football Association to make payments to clubs when players are on international duty
I would probably refer to those as ‘hopes’ more than anything else, but then again I’m not writing 100 page strategy documents for the Scottish Premier League, so what do I know? Anyway, as far as a British League Cup goes
, I’m all for it. Even if it doesn’t do much good for Scotland’s FA in the long term, it would at the very least be cool to see the League Cup freshened up with some new faces.
