Apparently, first place in the group doesn’t mean a whole lot to Internacional. They’re currently locked up in a 0-0 draw with Emelec at halftime, and they appear content to keep it that way. A draw will be good enough to guarantee qualification for the defending champions of Copa Libertadores, but with superior talent at home, you would think they would be interested in getting all three points.
Internacional Vs. Emelec: Halftime, Defending Champions Seem Content With A Draw
As it stands, Emelec will not be going through to the next round. They need a victory to go through to the next round, nothing else will do. If Emelec do win this game and Jaguares de Chiapas hang on to their lead over Jorge Wilstermann in this group’s other game, the defending champions would be eliminated.
Internacional are playing with a flat 4-4-2 as opposed to the 4-2-3-1 they used en route to the trophy last season. This might suit the talents of Rafael Sobis well, but it’s not working well so far against Emelec. This actually looks eerily similar to the game Inter played against Jaguares in Chiapas, where the Mexican side nicked a victory after a 0-0 first half where Inter’s effort was questionable.
