As the announcer for the English language international feed of the match said, "Who would have thought five years ago that the center of Dutch football would be in Enschede?" That sums it up nicely. Despite their historically small stature, Twente have quickly morphed into a club even bigger than historical giants Ajax and the team they defeated tonight, PSV Eindhoven, by a score of 2-0. Despite the departure of manager Steve McLaren and legendary striker Blaise Nkufo, Twente are not only looking like unlikely repeat champions of the Eredivisie, but they're still competing on three fronts.
Bryan Ruiz was the catalyst for the win when he was introduced in the second half, while Theo Janssen was the clear man of the match. Ruiz drew a penalty and helped in the run-up to Janssen's open play goal, but the chipped finish on his second goal, combined with his great two-way play in midfield made Janssen a clear man of the match choice.
With Steve McLaren in attendance, Michel Preud'homme managed to do him proud. Twente are on the verge of not only back to back titles, but a historic and unusual treble. Yes, the center of Dutch football really is in Enschede.
