New England Revolution rookie Stephen McCarthy scored his first career MLS goal to give his team a 1-0 lead over the Portland Timbers in the 23rd minute on Saturday. The goal came after Zak Boggs sent a ball into the penalty area that was knocked out, but right to McCarthy, who volleyed it from about 18 yards out. McCarthy, who started in the midfield of the Revs 4-5-1, is not really known as a goal scorer and is much more of a defensive-minded player, but looked very comfortable on the strike.
