New England Revolution Vs. Portland Timbers: Stephen McCarthy Scores First MLS Goal

New England Revolution rookie Stephen McCarthy scored his first career MLS goal to give his team a 1-0 lead over the Portland Timbers in the 23rd minute on Saturday. The goal came after Zak Boggs sent a ball into the penalty area that was knocked out, but right to McCarthy, who volleyed it from about 18 yards out. McCarthy, who started in the midfield of the Revs 4-5-1, is not really known as a goal scorer and is much more of a defensive-minded player, but looked very comfortable on the strike.

The Revolution have now scored first in all three matches they have played. They held on for a tie against the Los Angeles Galaxy and beat DC United in Week 2.

The Timbers, on the other hand, have now allowed the first goal in all three of their MLS matches. That led to a 3-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids in Week 1 and a 2-0 loss to Toronto FC in Week 2.
