I think it's safe to say that Darron Gibson isn't the most popular member of Manchester United. The much-maligned midfielder has endured a forgettable season, often the target of jibes from friends and foe alike due to his slow, deliberate style and his unfortunate habit of losing the ball at inconvenient times.
Darron Gibson Joins Twitter, Quits Within 2 Hours After Abuse From Angry Fans
Quite why the Republic of Ireland listened to Rio Ferdinand's cajoling to join Twitter is a bit of a mystery, since I think it's pretty obvious what the reaction was going to be. No sooner had Ferdinand introduced his friend @dgibbo28 to the social networking site than the angry messages began to roll in, most of them unprintable. @dgibbo28 was no more two hours later.
It’s tempting to paint this as Manchester United fans being over the top in their abuse of one of their own, but the fact of the matter is that there’s a vocal lunatic fringe in every fanbase, and that players really should know what they’re getting into before they expose themselves to the public.
It’s all well and good for the Rio Ferdinands and Wayne Rooneys of the world, but one can’t help but question the wisdom of Gibson signing up for the service in the first place. Not that that excuses the abuse hurled his way, of course, but I don’t think being irrationally angry at perceived under-performers is a problem limited to United supporters.
Here’s Rio Ferdinand’s take:
Darron Gibson says he came on to see what the lads were up to....he came off because he couldn't be bothered with it not any other reason.
Uh huh.
