The following photograph was taken during the League Two match between Bury and Chesterfield on Monday. It features Bury goalkeeper Cameron Belford getting punched by a currently unknown assailant shortly after conceding a goal (Bury would eventually win 3-2, sealing promotion to League One in the process). While the story is interesting, the picture, perhaps, is more so:
Cameron Belford Punched By Chesterfield Fan - Anatomy Of A Pitch Invasion

(via Guardian)
- The Punch. Leaving aside the bizarre stylings of Assailant, The Punch merits further analysis. Looking at the final position of the fist - clearly after striking Mr. Belford, we see that unless something odd has happened the arm was at something like 50% extension upon impact, which is not conducive to a strong hit. We also see Assailant leaning backwards, presumably in order to clear space for The Punch. The overall implication is that Assailant is exceptionally bad at hitting people. The Child. The more one looks at this scene the stranger the presence of The Child seems. He is far too small to be a player, since FC Barcelona are not involved, and small children don’t often participate in pitch invasions or indeed player-punchings. Furthermore, he’s just walking by the melee. Who is he? Where is he going? The Spectator. Frozen in a yell. Is he condemning the assailant or cheering him onwards? Why did he wear a collared blue shirt to a football match? The Scarf. Despite the poor form on The Punch (see #1), we see the force of the impact send a blue and white scarf flaying out of the side of Mr. Belford’s head. This has worrying ramifications for Mr. Belford’s continued health. Are there more scarves in there? The Happiest Spectator. This man seems very happy indeed. Rarely has anyone been happier.
What an odd situation.
