Universidad Catolica are more than halfway to the quarterfinals of the 2011 Copa Libertadores, thanks to their 2-1 defeat of Gremio in Porto Alegre. Gremio will have a very difficult task in front of them to reverse this result in Chile, especially since they’ll have to do it without Borges, who will be suspended.
Gremio Vs. Universidad Catolica, 2011 Copa Libertadores: Full Time, UC Notch Huge Win
The reason Borges will be suspended is that he picked up a deserved straight red card for an errant elbow in the first half, just after Lucas Pratto put UC ahead 1-0. Down a goal and a man at halftime, Gremio appeared to be in big trouble.
In the 58th minute, playmaker Douglas restored some of their hope, scoring a stunning goal from 30 yards out to tie the score at 1-1. Douglas had hit the post on a similar shot in the 10th minute, and he’s shown a tendency over the years to score those kinds of goals.
UC would re-establish their advantage, though, and it would once again be Pratto who scored the goal, this time on a header from open play while he was poorly marked. By re-gaining the lead, they’ve made themselves serious favorites to advance to the next round, where they would face the winner of the Internacional-Peñarol tie.
