Real Madrid vs. Barcelona, 2011 UEFA Champions League Semifinal: Marcelo Wins Corner, Angel Di Maria Wastes It

It's interesting how most sides deal with Barcelona by pressing hard in the midfield, because that's really what lets them make those beautiful passes that have become their trademark. As soon as the Real Madrid players start to close them down, the visitors are able to wriggle free and push forwards, which is how most of their attacks are being born. Real will have to figure out a way or trying to apply pressure without opening up the passing lanes in the process, which is quite a difficult ask.

Meanwhile, though, the hosts have seen a little more of the ball, Marcelo surging down the left side and rather flukily winning a corner, which ends up totally wasted by Angel di Maria as the winger tried to run into Victor Valdes’ box. He had a chance to cross it there and instead opted for some elaborate manouvre which was roughly as successful as my professional football career.

This is the third of four matches between Real Madrid and Barcelona. You can view our coverage of the April 16th and 20th match here and here, with live coverage of Real Madrid vs Barcelona on April 27 in this story stream.
