Despite dominating possession and looking dangerous for a couple of moments, Real Madrid was for the most part flat in the first half...and Zaragoza wasn't much better. To be honest, it was an exceedingly dull 45 minutes of football and after all the excitement and controversy from the midweek, I suppose it's not all that surprising for Madrid. The only highlight came late on a play Iker Casillas will likely want to forget.
Real Madrid Vs. Real Zaragoza: Zaragoza Leads 1-0 At Halftime Thanks To A Casillas Howler
Real Madrid did threaten a couple times in the half thanks to free kicks in dangerous spots outside the Zaragoza box, but neither set piece troubled Zaragoza goalkeeper Antonio Doblas. Madrid best chance of the half came in the 18th minute when Kaka’s shot from outside the box went just wide of goal.
As is usually the case, just as I was ready to write off the half and complain about how totally dull it was, Zaragoza struck.
A long ball in from the midfield forced Iker Casillas to come far off his line, but when the Madrid keeper went to clear the ball, he completely missed. The ball fell right the feet of Lafita who sent it in to the empty net. It was a truly shocking mistake from Casillas who could do little more than shake his head and mutter to himself after gifting Zaragoza an undeserved goal. Though, to be fair, Madrid didn’t deserve a goal either.
