Athletic Bilbao matched Real Madrid throughout the first half of their La Liga matchup, but it’s Los Merengues who hold a narrow 1-0 lead, thanks to a penalty that Angel Di Maria drew and Kaka converted. As if he downed a couple cans of Four Loko or a similar product before heading out onto the field, Athletic goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz has played like he’s drunk and hyper, and it was his ill-advised challenge that lead to the penalty. He’s made a couple of other brash decisions and has not exactly been in control.
Athletic Bilbao Vs. Real Madrid: Los Blancos Lead At Halftime
Though Athletic kept the ball in the Madrid half for the vast majority of the first half, they struggled to create any real clear cut scoring opportunities. Real Madrid had a couple of other very good opportunities, and despite being matched throughout the first half, they could very easily be up two or three goals.
To start the second half, Athletic made one change, bringing on David Lopez for Carlos Gurpegui in an attacking move.
