Philadelphia Union Vs. New York Red Bulls: 1-0 Full Time, Tim Ream Error Gifts Philly A Win

The New York Red Bulls did everything right except for two small things. They didn’t put the ball into the back of the net, and they made one awful mental error to gift a goal to the Philadelphia Union. Other than that, they were the better team for 90 minutes. Unfortunately, scoring and not making bad mental errors in defense are almost certainly the two most important aspects of the game, so despite their apparent superiority, it’s hard to argue that the Red Bulls deserved to win.

In the 68th minute, Tim Ream turned the ball over to Danny Mwanga, who found Roger Torres for the goal, and that was that. The Union played with 10 men behind the ball for the vast majority of the game and defended extremely deep. Ream, Rafael Marquez, and Teemu Tainio were not pressured when they had the ball. Philly played for a 0-0 draw, and they got a 1-0 win. It was a tough loss for the Red Bulls, but it’s unlikely that Hans Backe is set to make wholesale changes anytime soon. Based on the way they played for most of this match, they should start winning games any time now.
