It had been too long since we last brought up assistant referee Sian Massey’s name around these parts. While Massey was not the centre of attention in the Cardiff City vs. Middlesborough, she was involved in a curious incident late on in the match, when Cardiff defender Kevin McNaughton flattened her while attempting to prevent the ball going out of play. She was fine, although there have been some suggestions that McNaughton hit her deliberately. Check out the video after the jump and see what you think.

Personally, I’d have to give him the benefit of the doubt here. It’s very easy to stumble when trying to move out of another player’s way, and although the fact that he didn’t apologise and help her up is a little bit incriminating it’s hardly conclusive proof that McNaughton did anything untowards. If he was going after her on purpose, that’s a) shameful and b) more than a little bit weird, but I’m not buying that story.
Massey, of course, was the one caught in the middle of the sexism row that eventually claimed the careers of former Sky Sports presenters Richard Keys and Andy Gray, although in the end she was simply the vessel by which their dubious opinions came to light. It’s tempting but probably ultimately silly to imagine fans of the two holding a grudge against her, but that’s the easy option and one I imagine many will go for.
