Houston Dynamo Confirm Efforts To Void Koke’s Contract
“The process was initiated by Koke after the game on Saturday by speaking with [head coach] Dominic [Kinnear] and expressing interest to leave the club,” Dynamo president Chris Canetti said in a press release. “Dominic asked him to give the situation more time, and Koke said he would prefer to leave immediately. Based on those wishes and the fact that our expectations so far had not been met, we made the decision to terminate his contract as soon as possible.”
In comments to futbolMLS.com, Koke said his lack of playing time was understandable for a player new to the league such as himself and that it had nothing to do with his decision to leave the team. Rather, he said it was personal reasons and that he missed his family, which is still in Europe.
“On a personal level, I have not been able to settle here,” he said of joining MLS. “I’m not adapting because of my family. My family is very close to me, I have a daughter and I’m separated from my wife. Playing in Europe, I have everything much closer because I can enjoy my daughter and, here in the United States, I can’t see her when I want. It’s complicated for her to come here because she’s two years old.”
