Costa Rica and Honduras have not been able to settle their Gold Cup quarterfinal matchup in 90 minutes, so the two sides are now headed to extra time with the score tied up at 1-1. After a fairly lackluster first half that saw Honduras suffer an injury and Costa Rica struggle to pass the ball, the second half has been wildly entertaining, as it's had everything that one might want in a football game. There have been two goals, multiple saves, physical play, fighting, drama, and a big substitution as Wilson Palacios has entered the game.
Costa Rica Vs. Honduras, 2011 Gold Cup Quarterfinals: Teams Head To Extra Time
Honduras opening the scoring in the 49th minute, thanks to a goal by Jerry Bengston. Javier Portillo created the chance and had his effort pushed away by Keylor Navas, but Bengston tapped in the rebound to give his team the lead. That lead didn’t last long, though, as Dennis Marshall scored an equalizer in the 56th minute, heading in a corner kick from Christian Bolaños.
Both teams had big chances to win the match, but were ultimately thwarted by the opposing goalkeeper. Costa Rica were granted a penalty in the 73rd minute when Marco Ureña was hauled down by Victor Bernardez. However, Noel Valladares saved Alvaro Saborio's penalty attempt, and the game remained tied. In stoppage time, Honduras had a chance to win, but two successive shots were cleared off the line, first by Navas, then by Marshall.
Just before the whistle blew to signal the end of normal time, injured Honduran star Wilson Palacios entered the game for the final 30 minutes. Before the match, his manager said he was ‘65 percent.’
