After being branded as the third best team in CONCACAF and a potential challenger to the United States, Costa Rica has crashed out of the Gold Cup by losing to Honduras on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals. This marks the second straight bad loss for the Ticos after a 4-1 loss to Mexico, and Ricardo La Volpe's job might be in question heading into World Cup Qualifying.
Costa Rica Vs. Honduras, 2011 Gold Cup Quarterfinals: Catrachos Win On Penalties
Late in the game, Honduras brought injured stars Carlos Costly and Wilson Palacios off the bench, and the Catrachos seemed to pick up some energy and come back into the game after they entered. Both players netted penalties while both Celso Borges and Alvaro Saborio - a couple of fantastic finishers - hit the crossbar and missed for Costa Rica.
On Wednesday, Honduras contests the semifinals against the winner of tonight’s late game, Mexico vs. Guatemala. El Tri are heavy favorites, and Honduras is probably already mentally preparing for a match against Chicharito and company.
