Mexico Vs. Guatemala, 2011 Gold Cup Quarterfinals: El Tri Trails At Halftime

Mexico were expected to defeat Guatemala without much of a problem and coast into the semifinals of the Gold Cup, but they're finding this quarterfinal match more difficult than anticipated. Guatemala has a 1-0 lead at halftime, thanks to a goal by Carlos Ruiz in the 5th minute. Mexico have gotten off to relatively slow starts before exploding in this tournament, so it shouldn't be too shocking that they're yet to score, but this is the first time in the tournament that they have fallen behind their opponent.

Ruiz scored thanks to a bad defensive error by Hector Moreno, who completely misplayed a long ball and left Ruiz alone with the ball at the top of the box. Alfredo Talavera was too aggressive coming out of his box and Ruiz chipped him, putting the ball into the back of the net to give his team the lead.

Guatemala are packing everyone behind the ball while Mexico are pushing everyone forward, and this has had predictable results. Mexico has all of the possession, but Guatemala have some space when they get out on the counter attack. Mexico haven’t been terribly patient, and Jose Manuel de la Torre will likely make some adjustments in the locker room.
