Update: FC Porto have released a statement confirming and accepting Villas Boas’ resignation, contingent on receiving the €15M payment to trigger his release clause.
Andre Villas Boas Resigns From Role As Porto Boss
Andre Villas Boas' representatives have informed the Portuguese official news agency that the manager has resigned from his position as Porto manager, agreeing to pay the €15m clause himself.
The highly-rated coach, who is the youngest manager ever to win a European trophy, has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea in the English Premier League, and it seems all but certain that the deal will go ahead.
It is an interesting move, not least because of Villas-Boas’ reputation as ‘the new Jose Mourinho’, due to his Porto links and previous working relationship with his former mentor, who led Chelsea to two consecutive league titles in 2005 and 2006 before leaving the London club after a dispute with owner Roman Abramovich.
Given that one and a half years appears to be the average lifespan of a Chelsea coach, it will be interesting to see whether the notoriously trigger-happy Abramovich will be more patient with a manager so young and who had such a large release fee, should he fail to bring the success that is craved by the Russian billionaire. With Ancelotti unceremoniously sacked after leading his club to a double and second-placed finish over two years, standards are high at the Blues, and the fans as well as Abramovich will be hoping that Villas-Boas is the man to lead them to a Champions League trophy, the one prize that has eluded them since the Russian’s takeover.
