One possible source of inspiration may have been the “Date with a Sounder” commercials that have been playing in Seattle for about a month. In that video, Levesque said his goal celebration was a “pirate face,” which I suppose is at least nautically themed. It appears he used that one, too.

MLS receives a lot of, in my opinion, undeserved criticism for their scheduling decisions. I understand why they didn’t feel like taking time off for the Gold Cup. I’ll forgive them for scheduling nationally televised games for 11 p.m. Eastern. But scheduling two games on the same day as the Gold Cup semis? Really? Is that remotely necessary?
Neither game is on national TV, so that’s obviously not the reason. All four teams do have a weekend game scheduled, but that doesn’t mean these games couldn’t have been played on Thursday. The one game being played on Thursday is being broadcast on ESPN2, but both of Wednesday’s games could have been scheduled early enough not to conflict. This just seems to be an example of the league being purposefully obtuse.
