After some back and forth play early on between FC Dallas and the Portland Timbers, the Toros finally broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Zach Loyd found himself on the backpost during a corner kick and was able to get the final touch on the ball to give Dallas the early lead.
FC Dallas Vs. Portland Timbers: Halftime, Loyd and John Put Dallas Up 2-0
The goal was Loyd's first career goal. Daniel Hernandez was credited with the assist on the play.
Shortly, after the Loyd goal Dallas found the back of the net again with another defender. George John headed home the game's second goal in the 39th minute. Hernandez registered his second assist on the play.
Dallas had been weathering the Timber's attack for the 10 minutes or so leading up to the corner. Dallas had been giving up a few dangerous set pieces in their own end and Portland just couldn't connect on any of them. Jack Jewsbury had put in a couple quality chances but Kevin Hartman made a couple key stops to keep Dallas on top.
Its possible the two goals took the sails out of the Timbers attack as they finished the half chasing the ball as Dallas worked on building up their possession figure.
