VIDEO: River Plate Riot Police Firing Rubber Bullets At Crowds

It was pure carnage outside the Estadio Monumental after the 1-1 draw between Piver Plate and Belgrano which saw the former relegated for the first time in history (and by all accounts, it is still pure carnage). Before the game had even ended, fans had invaded the pitch, and things snowballed from there, with the police trying to protect the visiting fans from thugs posing as Los Millonarios supporters while the disturbance spread outside.

At which point, the shooting started:

The footage above is of rioters in Buenos Aires setting fire to trash cans immediately outside of River Plate’s ground and the police forces responding to the crowd by opening fire with rubber bullets and tear gas from their defensive position. Seeing the police shooting at crowds, rubber bullets or no, is a deeply disturbing image - but then again, hearing reports of police vans being torched with people still inside and news that at least five officers have been severely injured in the riots so far doesn’t exactly make the thugs seem like sympathetic figures.

What an awful mess.
