Alex Morgan, Servando Carrasco Handling Attention Well

By now you've probably heard all about Women's World Cup breakout star Alex Morgan's relationship with Seattle Sounders backup midfielder Servando Carrasco. The two have been dating for more than three years after meeting while both were playing college soccer at Cal-Berkeley and have maintained that relationship while both pursued professional playing careers.

In contrast to many pro-athlete couples, Morgan is now the considerably more famous one. This has led to some interesting moments for Carrasco, such as his team’s trip to Southern California where on a group outing they happened across this advertisement:

Here’s what Morgan told ESPN about the photo: “That photo is so funny, but I really feel bad for him,” Morgan said. “All his teammates were making fun of him.”

To his credit, Carrasco seems to be taking it all in stride. In talking to the Seattle Times, he sounded to be genuinely happy that his girlfriend was enjoying the kind of success she has been. One of the more telling lines from his interview was when he was asked how he reacted to Morgan’s goal in the final: “Oh, I went crazy. I was at my house with my roommates, who are on the team also, and a couple of the neighbors, and I just went nuts. We all play soccer so you know you can’t celebrate too much and you have to stay focused. We celebrated and then we sat back down.”

Making this whole situation even better is the genuine skill that Morgan displayed during the World Cup. If she was just another pretty face, it would be easy to write this all off as just another moment when women’s soccer temporarily worked its way into the spotlight.

That goal, as well as her extra-time assist to Abby Wambach should secure her rightful place among American soccer stars. It’s too bad that neither stood up as Cup-winners, but that does not diminish what a great story she and the team have become.
