VIDEO: Alex Morgan Scores Clever Side-Footed Goal

Like all great goal-scorers, the easiest path to goal isn't always the preferred one for Alex Morgan. Case in point is her goal on Saturday when her Western New York Flash were taking on the Boston Breakers. Sure, you could watch this goal and say "why didn't she just hit that while pivoting around?" But doesn't that take some of the fun out of it?

Morgan chooses to hit the volley in just about as awkward a way as humanly possible, hitting with the side of her foot that allows her to get zero momentum behind it. But it worked, and let’s be honest: If she just simply hits it with her right foot on a pivot, I’m not writing about it.

There’s an old adage in sports: There’s no extra points for difficulty. Well, maybe there’s a different equation going on. Maybe Morgan realizes that in order for Women’s Professional Soccer to really survive, it’s going to have grab our attention. It’s goals like this that have the potential to do that very thing.
