Sergio Batista’s stint as Argentina manager was short as he resigned following a disappointing Copa America and amid rumors that he would be fired. He’s been replaced by Alejandro Sabella.
Alejandro Sabella Takes Over Argentinian National Team
Sabella is a bit of a curious choice. His history with the national team is mainly as n assistant manager, and he’s only got two years of true managerial experience under his belt. He did win the Copa Libertadores with Estudiantes in his first year with the club (2009), but resigned earlier this year. He wasn’t particularly highly sought-after, either, and was set for a move to oversee Al-Jazira club in the UAE league before being poached away by his home country.
So, from the outside, this is a bit of an odd decision. If you’re unfamiliar with him, the only real draw Sabella appears to have on his resume is his experience as an assistant manager, and that’s never something that really inspires confidence. Still, he could be fantastic at his job, or he could be terrible. He’s never been in a high-enough profile spot for anyone to really notice. We’ll just have to wait and see
