UEFA Champions League Playoff Round, Second Legs: Bayern Munich Look To Hold Onto Lead

To be completely honest, Tuesday is definitely the less sexy of the two days of Champions League football this week. Wednesday features three fantastic ties with big-name teams, including the highly anticipated Udinese-Arsenal matchup, but Tuesday features mostly matches that are formalities or not terribly interesting to casual fans. APOEL Nicosia (Cyprus) vs. Wisla Krakow (Poland)

First Leg: 1-0 Wisla

Between Polish international Patryk Malecki’s goal and APOEL’s inability to score in Krakow, APOEL are in some trouble at home. The veterans of the Champions League group stages are also playing for their entire country, as a trip to the next round could see Cyprus gain another European place. APOEL has plenty of firepower, and should be able to score at home.

Racing Genk (Belgium) vs. Maccabi Haifa (Israel)

First Leg: 2-1 Maccabi Haifa

After 28 minutes of the first leg, it appeared that injury-ravaged Genk were going out of the Champions League without putting up much of a fight. However, Maccabi Haifa’s dominance ended at that point and Genk found an away goal in the 61st minute, giving themselves a big chance to overturn the result in Belgium.

Malmo FF (Sweden) vs. Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia)

First Leg: 4-1 Dinamo

Dinamo Zagreb are playing themselves into an absolutely massive payday. Not only are they about to get paid big money for making the Champions League group stage, they’re about to get Sammir and Milan Badelj into the worldwide spotlight. Cha-ching.

Bayern Munich (Germany) vs. FC Zurich (Switzerland)

First Leg: 2-0 Bayern

Bayern Munich are very much in control of this tie after a 2-0 win at the Allianz Arena, but it could have been so much more. Striker Mario Gomez was completely off of his game, and had he been his usual lethal finishing self, Bayern would have put the tie completely to bed with a 4-0 or 5-0 win. As it stands, Zurich still have a chance, but are still massive underdogs as well.
