Thanks to a massive investigation into match fixing in Turkish football, Super Lig champions and giants of European football Fenerbahce will be removed from Thursday’s UEFA Champions League group stage draw. The Turkish football federation have confirmed that the team will not be allowed to compete in the competition.
Fenerbahce Removed From UEFA Champions League Competition Due To Match Fixing Scandal
Fenerbahce are one of the most well-supported clubs in all of world football and have found themselves at the center of the match fixing scandal. Club President Aziz Yildrim was detained by police as part of the investigation, along with other members of the club’s board and training staff. As a result of the investigation, the start of the Super Lig season has been pushed back a month, to September 9, so that the TFF can complete their investigation.
UEFA has not yet revealed how Fener will be replaced in the draw. Someone, somehow will have to replace them, as UEFA is unlikely to move forward with a 31 team group stage for the Champions League.
