Fenerbahce Out, Trabzonspor Into UEFA Champions League Group Stage

Earlier today, we learned that Fenerbahce was removed from the UEFA Champions League due to their involvement in a match fixing scandal. Technically, if Turkey removes a team, they have the right to replace them with another. However, due to the sudden nature of the announcement, there was a great deal of speculation about who might replace them. In the end, the TFF have done the seemingly sensible thing and replaced Fener with the second-placed team, Trabzonspor, as confirmed by ESPN and other outlets.

However, Trabzonspor are not 100 percent clean, by all accounts. They are not involved in the match fixing scandal to nearly the degree of Fenerbahce, but many believed that the seemingly clean Bursaspor would receive the spot due to Trabzonspor not being completely “clean.”

The draw for the competition takes place tomorrow, and all teams still playing will now be well aware that they must win in order to advance.
