After being frozen out, then welcomed back into the fold, Joey Barton has finally left Newcastle United on a free transfer. He joins relegation candidates Queens Park Rangers, with Neil Warnock excited about signing a player whom he wanted so sign in 2007.
Newcastle United Confirm Transfer Of Joey Barton To QPR
Up until this morning, Barton didn’t want to leave Newcastle, but with no new contract offer forthcoming, and Barton’s contract running out in a years time, and Newcastle’s announcement that he was available for free meant even Barton understood that he was no longer wanted on Tyneside.
Barton is the first “purchase” under new owner Tony Fernandes, and has signed a rumoured £80,000 a week contract for 4 years. What’s often missed about Barton is that he is a good Premiership player, and should help QPR stay up, but all too often his incendiary behaviour and Twitter feed gets in the way of his talent. If Barton can get a hold of his anger, like he did last season, he could be an excellent signing for QPR. If not, he’ll be on the market again next year.
