It’s been rumored for quite some time, but Russian international Yuri Zhirkov has finally sealed his exit from Stamford Bridge. After failing to supplant either Ashley Cole or Florent Malouda in the Chelsea lineup in his time with the club, Zhirkov has moved to rising Russian power Anzhi Makhachkala for an undisclosed transfer fee. Previously rumored prices put the possible transfer fee as high as £14m. He was introduced to the club’s fans this afternoon.

Since purchasing the club, Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimov has poured tons of resources into the team and purchased numerous players. The club’s high-profile and high-earning stars include Roberto Carlos, formerly of the Brazilian national team, Corinthians and Real Madrid, and Balázs Dzsudzsák, who was purchased from PSV Eindhoven. Anzhi’s new signings have propelled them to some success early on in Russia, as they currently sit fifth in the Russian Premier League.
At the moment, Anzhi will be concerned with qualifying for the Championship Group in the Spring. If they’re successful, expect even more players to be purchased by Kerimov in an attempt to push Anzhi towards the title and Champions League football.
